A friend of mine uses this free web design software to create her websites. By her own admission, she’s not that tech savvy, and hasn’t had a problem using it. It’s open source software which means that a team of people have created it and support it in their own time.

I did check this site out but I couldn’t find a link to a free template. Maybe I am doing something wrong.

I am ready to start shopping for a site but I need help, I really don’t know what to for in a host. Can anyone help me figure out what I should look for?

I’ve used various website templates, WYSIWYG, html, css, MS Publisher, MS Word and others. For a beginner website you might try Homestead.com for 5- page website. (Free) Inexpensive hosting available, too. I used Homestead to build the Missouri Nurses Association, Third District website.

I use microsoft office website. The site is free and you are the host.

Thank you so much for this information. I have been researching free websites , due to my budget at this time. It can become a little overwhelming, since I do not have any experience about building a website. At this point, any information is more than welcomed.

Lisa, and fellow VAs, I really appreciate your articles, blogs, and comments!

My question is this…is Homestead still FREE, and is it the same one that is owned by Intuit?

I am trying to help (gratis) a Veteran’s organization find free web hosting, and I heard that Homestead was free. When I went to their site (the Intuit-owned site), it is free for 30 days, and is then $4.95 per month.

This is very reasonable, but I don’t want to tell these guys that it is FREE and then have a monthly fee…I look like an idiot …

I’m not familiar with Homestead, but I’m wary of getting free hosting anyway. I really believe that you need to pay for hosting if you’re serious about your business. Paid hosting is more reliable and you have more control etc.

Thanks for the tip about Blue Host.

I did some research after my comment (above) on the Homestead Hosting, and they are owned by Intuit (the QuickBooks and TurboTax company). They offer 1 month of free hosting, and then charge $4.95 per month for their simple, template-based sites.

They also offer other packages that cost more - and offer more.
I am not “pushing” them, but wanted to clarify their offer. My local veterninarian/animal rescue group uses them (Homestead) for their site.

I will definitely check on Blue Host. I was considering Network Solutions (the domain registrar) and some of their packages, but Blue Host has a really good rate (price)!
